Pastor Lafleur returns: between controversial speeches and public demonstrations
Port-au-Prince — After several years of relative media silence and controversies having deeply marked Haitian public opinion, Pastor Amel Lafleur resurfaces through fiery speeches, public speaking engagements and actions which once again spark debates and reactions in several sectors of society.
Known for his direct, theatrical and sometimes provocative style, the leader of the Narrow Gate Independent Church of God was suspended from all ministerial practice for five years by the Ministry of Religion in January 2023, following a national scandal linked to videos deemed contrary to public morals.
Today, despite the sanctions and persistent criticism, the name of Pastor Lafleur is once again beginning to circulate strongly on social networks and in several Christian communities. His new interventions attract both convinced believers and critical observers.
Speeches as impactful as ever
In his recent appearances, the pastor takes on a combative tone, mixing prophecies, social denunciations and spiritual messages. True to his reputation, he continues to use popular language and public demonstrations that divide opinion.
Some of his supporters speak of a “misunderstood man” who dares to say out loud what others are thinking quietly. Others, on the contrary, denounce a strategy aimed at attracting media attention in order to maintain its influence in the Haitian religious landscape.
Already before the scandals of 2023, Amel Lafleur regularly caused controversy with astonishing declarations, notably when he claimed to have “blocked Covid-19 in Haiti”.
A figure that continues to polarize
Even after official sanctions and criticism from the Protestant Federation of Haiti, many faithful remained attached to the preacher.
For some observers, this media feedback demonstrates the persistent influence of charismatic religious leaders in a Haitian society hit by economic, political and security crises. In a context where many seek spiritual answers or collective hope, religious figures retain an important place in public space.
However, voices continue to call for caution and the moral responsibility of religious leaders, recalling that past scandals have left a deep wound in national opinion.
Between faith, spectacle and controversy
The return of Pastor Lafleur once again shows the ability of controversial religious figures to remain at the center of public attention in Haiti. Between preaching, public demonstrations and shocking declarations, the pastor continues to arouse fascination, support, criticism and questions.
One thing remains certain: whether we approve or condemn him, Pastor Lafleur remains a figure whose each appearance immediately rekindles the debate in Haitian society.
