Why is Jesus said to be the cornerstone?

Share

In the Christian faith, Jesus Christ is often referred to as the “cornerstone,” a richly meaningful image that runs through Scripture, from the Old to the New Testament.

The cornerstone, in construction, is the fundamental element that supports and aligns an entire structure. Symbolically, it represents the central and indispensable role of Jesus in the divine plan for humanity.

Jesus is the foundation of the Christian faith: Jesus is presented as the only foundation on which the Christian faith can be built.

He is prophesied as the cornerstone in the Old Testament: The Scriptures announce that the Messiah will be a precious and solid stone, serving as a sure foundation.

Jesus is the rejected stone that has become essential: Although he was rejected by men, Jesus became the main and indispensable stone in God’s plan.

He unites believers in a spiritual temple: Jesus brings believers together to form a spiritual building, a holy temple dedicated to God.

Jesus is the standard for aligning our lives: Just as a cornerstone aligns a building, Jesus serves as the model for living in accordance with divine principles.

He is chosen and precious in the eyes of God: Jesus is considered a living stone, chosen by God and precious to those who believe in him.

His Resurrection Confirms His Unique Role: Jesus’ resurrection proves that he is victorious over death and worthy of being the cornerstone of the Christian faith.

He is central in God’s plan: Jesus occupies a central place in the divine plan, guaranteeing the unity and solidity of the kingdom of God.

Each believer becomes a “living stone” within himself: Believers are compared to living stones which, together, form a spiritual house built on Jesus.

Rejecting Jesus has serious spiritual consequences: Those who reject Jesus stumble over him, because he becomes a stumbling block, a major spiritual obstacle.

These facts show that Jesus occupies a fundamental place in the Christian faith and in the divine plan for humanity.
