Singer-songwriter DOE, aka Dominique Jones, scores his second consecutive career debut as a solo artist on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart, as “Brighter” jumps from No. 5 to No. 1 on the list dated January 8, 2022.
During the tracking week ending January 2, the single increased 24% in plays, according to MRC Data.
“Brighter” is DOE’s second solo Gospel Airplay entry and first in a lead role. As featured on “Good & Loved” by Travis Greeneshe led for a week last May. (The song became Greene’s fifth No. 1.)
“I’m so excited to hear that people are grooving to ‘Brighter,’” DOE told Billboard. “It’s interesting, because I think a lot of us could forget about the bigger picture and live for ourselves. But I’m finding a more extravagant and fulfilling life as I shine for Jesus. This is not the beginning, and I’ve had the support of my family and my label.” [Life Room/RCA Inspiration/PLG] throughout this process. But I’m grateful for every victory along this journey, and this one is a big one.
DOE, who grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana, broke through in the Jones family group Forever JONES, which also topped Gospel Airplay on its first visit to the chart, when “He Wants It All” led for one week in 2010. The song’s parent album, Get Ready, reached No. 3 the same year on Top Gospel Albums.
Meanwhile, DOE joins Casey J as the only women to lead Gospel Airplay with their first two entries since the chart’s launch in March 2005. Casey J’s “Fill Me Up” topped the chart for 15 frames starting in February 2015 and “I’m Yours” reigned for five weeks starting in March 2016.
