Fostering Awareness: Kirk Franklin’s Call for Gospel Music Recognition

Kirk Franklin emphasizes the importance of gospel music in Black culture and aims to raise awareness and celebration of its rich heritage during Gospel Music Heritage Month.

In the realm of gospel music, Kirk Franklin, an influential American gospel artist, is on a mission to highlight the genre’s significance within Black culture. Franklin’s advocacy resonates strongly as he reflects on how gospel music serves as the foundation for many forms of Black music.

He emphasizes the need for inclusivity, urging mainstream media to acknowledge the contributions of gospel artists whose work has shaped the cultural landscape. Franklin believes that recognizing these artists not only celebrates their legacy but also enriches the understanding of Black musical history, fostering compassion and love among listeners.

Franklin’s recent discussion with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden coincides with Gospel Music Heritage Month, a time dedicated to honoring gospel music’s heritage.

In this dialogue, Franklin pointed out the glaring absence of gospel albums in Apple Music’s list of the 100 Best Albums, despite the presence of numerous works by Black artists. Notably, he advocates for Aretha Franklin’s “Amazing Grace” and Edwin Hawkins Singers’ “Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord” as essential inclusions.

Furthermore, Franklin reflects on the transformative experience of his latest album, “Father’s Day,” released in 2023, which dives into his personal journey of identity and faith. This narrative reinforces the overarching message that there is a place for everyone in the conversation about gospel music and its relevance in contemporary culture.
