Tasha Cobbs Leonard at the Top of Gospel Charts

A Fifth No. 1 with “Gotta Believe”

Tasha Cobbs Leonard has reached a new milestone with her fifth No. 1 on the Billboard Gospel Airplay chart with her song “Gotta Believe”. This song saw a 21% increase in plays during the tracking week ending March 13, according to MRC Data. Cobbs Leonard wrote this new solo lead, marking another step in her career.

A Year Marked by Joy

This achievement follows closely on the heels of Cobbs Leonard’s announcement on March 9 that she and her husband, producer Kenneth Leonard, have adopted a baby boy named Asher Amaris Leonard. This news was shared on Instagram, prompting a wave of support and congratulations from her fans.

“Gotta Believe”: A Testimony of Faith

In a statement to Billboard, Cobbs Leonard explained that “Gotta Believe” was written as a testament to God’s faithfulness during a difficult time in their fertility journey. She expressed her gratitude as the song became the most played on gospel radio the same week their baby’s adoption was finalized.

Previous Successes

“Gotta Believe” follows her previous successes, including “In Spite of Me”, which led the chart for a week last June, and “You Know My Name (Live)”, which led for a week in October 2019. Cobbs Leonard also dominated the Gospel Airplay chart with her debut hit “Break Every Chain” for seven weeks starting in June 2013, and added a second No. 1 as a featured artist on Kirk Franklin’s “My World Needs You”.

Recognition and Rankings

With five No. 1s on Gospel Airplay, Cobbs Leonard ties six other acts for the fourth-best total. Among women, she and Jekalyn Carr trail only Tamela Mann, who has eight No. 1s; Mann and Kirk Franklin have the most leaders of any act. Tasha Cobbs Leonard was also named the Best Gospel Artist of the Decade by Billboard, highlighting her lasting impact on the genre.
