Voluntary click and digital sobriety – young Christians in front of networks

Share

I do not come to tell you about clicks or social applications in themselves. You probably know better than me Whatsapp, Facebook, Tiktok, YouTube, Instagram… All these applications on our smartphones. It takes only one click to access it, a click to have access to the content.

The click has become a social reflex: a simple gesture that opens the door to whole worlds of connections … and sometimes dependence. That said, not all clicks lead to the same place, or to the same content.

Everyone has their interests; No one is interested in everything. For you, a young Christian, there are so -called “toxic” content that must be avoided. Avoiding them is not always easy because there are voluntary clicks and also involuntary clicks.

But here I would like to offer you a different click.

Voluntary click

What are the main types of communication existing? This is an example of research that you can do on the internet. And when you take it, no matter the application, you will find data related to what you are looking for.

This means that you can control what you look at or hear, that you can do some research according to your needs.

But do you really control what you look at or listen? Do you not sometimes let yourself be carried away by a temptation that you call curiosity? Or by the pressure of the networks?

It happens that we click on content which, at the base, seemed harmless, but which end up taking us into toxic, unwanted areas, which your eyes should not see and that your ears should not hear.

Maybe you clicked “just for five seconds”, but by navigating, you lost yourself.

At that time, you can make God the same request as David: “Divert my eyes from the sight of vain things, make me live in your way. »(Psalm 119: 37)

Involuntary click

What makes applications like Facebook, YouTube, Tiktok or Instagram particularly addictive is their navigation mode. Just one click to move from one content to another. And often, you are offered publications that you did not even look for, perhaps depending on what you look at, likes or shares, or according to their virality, for the sole purpose of keeping you on the platform.

Thus, you receive all kinds of publications, including those that you would never have wanted to see. It only takes a click to access toxic content: content that does not keep your eyes pure, which defiles your mind, which incites you to evil or shocks you.

This can be hypersexualized scenes, speeches that divert you from the Christian faith, bad influencers, provocative images, violent or shocking videos …

You may not have cheap them directly. But they come to you.

This is why stone exhortation is so important:

“Be sober, watch out. Your opponent, the devil, lurks like a roaring lion, seeking who devour. »(1 Pierre 5: 8)

But are you forced to consume them? Certainly not.

And you only need less than five seconds – yes, less than five seconds – to get rid of it.

Click for click

It is the simplest, fastest, most useful thing that everyone can do. One thing you don’t need to learn for two hours. But who always has the courage to do it?

Just a click to save from harmful content.

The formula is simple: if, in one click, you have been given this content, in one other, you can refuse it.

So click for click. Refuse evil, unmask it. Because the Bible calls us not to close our eyes:
“Do not take any part in the sterile works of the darkness, but rather unmask them. (Ephesians 5: 11, NBS)

Maybe your curiosity prevents you. Maybe you feel strong enough … But believe me, this little gesture, if you refuse to do it, can ruin you. Worse, it can end up obscuring you.

It only takes a little will and conviction.

Whether through voluntary or involuntary clicks, take the courage to say no.

The recipe is simple: just a click to move on to more useful content. Use it.

You may tell me that the problem is complex, that it is not so simple … but it click for click is an antidote that can make a big difference.

And don’t forget:

“Do not be defeated by evil, but be victorious by evil by good. »(Romans 12: 21)
