Tony Evans returns to preach in Dallas after withdrawal for “sin” in 2024

Share

Tony Evans, an essential figure in the American evangelical movement and founding pastor of the OAK Cliff Bible Fellowship Church in Dallas, marks his return to preaching after more than a year of absence. This news sounds in the international Christian landscape, where transparency on the challenges of leadership and pastoral reintegration occupies a central place.

On June 9, 2024, Tony Evans announced publicly before the Church, his decision to withdraw from his pastoral responsibilities following the recognition of a “sin committed a certain number of years ago”. If Evans confirmed that he had committed any crime, he underlined a failure of “just judgment”, claiming respect for the biblical principles of repentance and restoration. Despite the high expectation of clarification, the exact nature of the act at the origin of withdrawal remains confidential, evoking the preservation of the family and ecclesial sphere.

During his withdrawal, Evans submitted to a process of healing and supervision supervised by the college of elders of the church. The exchanges were multiple, associating prayer and support, testifying to a collective desire to apply the principles of transparency and responsibility without attacking the dignity of the leader concerned. The impact was immediate on the evangelical community: the question of pastoral exemplarity, the forgiveness and the confidence of the faithful appeared as major themes in the public debate.

His gradual return to the ministry, started in August 2025, results in a resumption of preaching in the major meetings and at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, while remaining framed by the bodies of the church. To date, official resettlement in its main pastoral functions remains under study, illustrating the prudence of those responsible for demanding spiritual governance.

This event highlights the modern management of leadership crises in the megachuchs, the strength of internal procedures for spiritual support, and the requirement of mature faith to combine exemplarity and thanks to evangelical ministries.
