“Words can be the source of life or death. Whoever likes to speak must accept the consequences.” Proverbs 18:21
Many people are not aware that what they say is closely linked to what they believe. If you let negative and destructive words come out of your mouth, you are not showing your faith in God.
You say you believe in God, but do your words confirm what you believe?
The story of David and Goliath illustrates this truth well (1 Samuel 17). Consider all the negative words David had to overcome before he could defeat the giant. His brother made fun of him. King Saul found him too young. The other soldiers told him that it was impossible to triumph over such a formidable warrior.
David was faced with a choice. He could have proven them right. He could have started grumbling about the impossibility of killing the giant. He could have complained that he was too small or that he didn’t have the proper weapons. But David had faith! He knew his size or lack of weapons didn’t matter. He believed deep in his heart that God would help him achieve victory.
Consider the words he chose to speak in these difficult circumstances: “You go against me with sword, spear, and javelin; and I march against you in the name of the LORD of hosts, of the God of the troops of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and cut off your head; today I will give the dead bodies of the Philistine camp to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the earth, and all the earth will know that Israel has a God. This whole assembly will recognize that it is neither by sword nor by spear that the Lord saves. For the battle belongs to the LORD, and he has delivered you into our hand” (1 Samuel 17:45-47).
These firm and powerful words not only built faith in David’s heart, they also encouraged and strengthened all of King Saul’s troops who heard them.
It’s up to you to choose whether you want to speak words that will build your faith or destroy it.
