Not having understood the meaning of the famine in her hometown, Elimelech left with her entire family to look for bread elsewhere. Unfortunately for him, this is not the bread he found. Rather, it was death that found him in the land of the Moabites. His two sons likewise perished in their quest
bread. What lessons can we learn about this?
Elimelech’s major problem was that he could not wait and be patient until God
visit his people again.
Habakkuk 2:3
3 For it is a prophecy whose time is already appointed, It is coming to its end, and it will not lie; If it delays, wait for it, For it will be accomplished, it will certainly be accomplished.
“The things I show you will happen, but only at the appointed time. They will soon come true, it’s not a lie. Wait with confidence, even if it takes a long time. Yes, for sure, they will arrive without delay. » (V.Word of Life)
It is also written that the testing of our faith must produce patience:
James 1:3-4
3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But patience must perform its work perfectly, that you may be perfect and complete, failing in nothing.
Not only did Elimelech lack patience, but he chose to find comfort in a land under a curse: the land of Moab. For those who don’t know it, the Moabites are the sons of the fruit of the incest of Lot and his two daughters. You can read this story in:
Genesis 19:30-3
30 Lot left Zoar for the heights, and settled on the mountain, with his two daughters, because he was afraid to remain in Zoar. He lived in a cave, he and his two daughters. 31 The eldest said to the youngest, Our father is old; and there is no man in the country to come to us, according to the custom of all countries.
The Moabites were a people under the curse and who were the enemies of the sons of Abraham. It was not a good idea to seek help from your enemies. This mistake cost him dearly.
My friend, in your impatience you will certainly be tempted to find solutions outside of God. In order to do things quickly, you will seek help from those who are still under the curse of the Law and Sin. Know that by doing so, you yourself will trigger the time bomb of your destruction. If you want to continue living, then do not look to the land of Moab, but keep your eyes fixed on Bethlehem. Because it was in Bethlehem that the promise of the Liberating Messiah was made. Bethlehem was to play an important role in the history of the salvation of humanity.
The LORD said, “And you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, are a small village among the clans of Judah. Yet whoever is to rule Israel, I will bring out from you. He belongs to a very old family.” (Word of Life)
