Strong Tower Church, a growing nondenominational congregation in the Washington, D.C., suburbs, has released its inspiring debut album, Fresh Wind-New Waves (Stronger Life Music). The fifteen-track collection of original praise and worship choruses was produced by Richard T. Davis, the church’s creative director and head of its music department. It features cameo appearances by veteran artists such as vocalist Maurette Brown-Clark, roots artist Leon Timbo and worship leader Freddy Rodriguez.
The opening track, “New Waves,” is a soft spoken track by Fredericksburg, Virginia church pastor Jeffrey Smith. His warm, resonant timbre commands the listener’s attention with the same authority of players like James Earl Jones or Morgan Freeman. He follows up with the uptempo “Waves,” led by Maurette Brown Clark, who is best known for such Billboard No. 1 hits as “It Ain’t Over (Until God Says It’s Over)” and “Un dieu.” The live session is built around a rhythm section, horns, and a team of brilliantly-voiced backing vocalists.
There’s a balance of moods on this collection. “Big” and “Stronger” shine with energetic bass lines and contemporary beats. There are heartfelt ballads like “With One Sound,” “Thank God,” “Lord, Fill Us Again” and “I’m Thankful.” Davis joins Tonya Kenon on a jazzy track, “More Than Enough,” which features acclaimed saxophonist Merlon Divine.
“Law of Breakthrough” is an anthem-style song that encourages the listener to triumph over obstacles. Leon Timbo’s soulful, earthy vocals inhabit the acoustic track “The Promise” with a depth of passion. Latin Christian artist Freddy Rodriguez shares his expressive tenor on the feel-good, uplifting “Empowered 2 Impact,” which bursts with the energy of a South American carnival. The album closes with the vibrant, R&B-infused call to worship, “In the River,” which features joyous vocals from Davis and his wife, Jennifer Davis.
