Port-au-Prince Evangelical Theological Seminary (STEP): A Beacon of Hope Amidst Challenges

On August 19, 2024, I witnessed an extraordinary event that would be etched in my memory. This day marked the public opening of the Port-au-Prince Evangelical Theological Seminary (STEP), and it wasn’t merely about showcasing our work. It was a powerful declaration of hope, an unwavering testament of faith amidst uncertainty. Allow me to share this remarkable experience with you.

STEP: A Resilient Institution Born from Hardship

STEP is not just another educational establishment; it is a lighthouse in turbulent waters, a sanctuary where faith is nurtured, and leaders are shaped to wield the gospel as their guiding principle. Established in 1942, this institution has dedicated itself to preparing men and women as disciples of Christ, ready to uplift their communities. Despite the tumultuous times in our nation, STEP stands firm, true to its purpose.

As Academic Dean Professor Andrikson Descollines aptly stated, “At STEP, we are known for our resilience. We have built a reputation for quality education, which is evident in the success of our open house events.”

You might wonder, how can a seminary thrive while so many others close their doors? The answer lies in divine providence, strategic leadership, and a community that refuses to be defeated.

A Moment to Ignite New Aspirations

The STEP Open House was much more than a chance to exhibit our facilities and programs. It was a profound opportunity to witness the manifestation of God’s power. Over 100 individuals answered the invitation, demonstrating that despite doubts, STEP’s mission continues to flourish.

Psychology professor Frantz Opont encapsulated this sentiment well: “This initiative aims to showcase STEP’s positive image as an institution that cultivates leaders, reminding everyone that STEP is vibrant and impactful.”

Our mission is clear: to equip Haitian leaders with the tools to make disciples for Christ, transforming their communities for the glory of God.

Dean of Students, Professor Duckens Saint Phart, affirmed this truth passionately: “The mission of STEP transcends circumstances. It is a divine mandate, requiring our constant availability to fulfill it.” At STEP, we let our faith guide us, rising above challenges.

A Victory That Inspires

By the end of the day, an invisible yet palpable victory lingered in the atmosphere—a triumph over doubt and fear, reaffirming that the mission was indeed achievable. STEP demonstrated that with God, anything is possible.

Professor Descollines remarked, “Our continued existence as an educational institution since 2019 is a testament to our commitment.” Indeed, STEP is here to stay, relentlessly fostering leaders and emanating the light of the Gospel in these trying times.

So, what remains from that memorable day? Hope. A hope that steadfastly assures us that STEP will remain a nurturing ground where dreams take root, leaders are born, and the Word of God thrives.

STEP is far more than just a place of learning; it is a spiritual haven where you will deepen your connection to God’s Word, equipping you to navigate today’s challenges with wisdom and discernment. This is where resilience and faith merge to create an everlasting narrative.

Picture a place where each day begins by not only teaching the Word of God but embodying it. A sanctuary where individuals rise not for personal gain but to disciple others for Christ’s cause in transforming communities. That place is STEP.
