Reforms needed for the copyright of Congolese artists
During the general states of justice held in Kinshasa, the pastor Moise Mbiyegospel musician and church leader, addressed crucial topics regarding copyright and the protection of Congolese artists. His talk highlighted the challenges facing local artists, particularly in an environment where worldly musicians appear to enjoy greater public support.
Moise Mbiye stressed that the current trend, often called “ Libanga », favors artists who integrate references to well-known personalities in their works. This poses a problem for those, like gospel musicians, who choose to celebrate only spiritual values. How can these artists thrive in this culture where name dropping is predominant?
Proposals from Moise Mbiye
To remedy this situation, he proposed that the Congolese state take measures to ensure management active and transparent Congolese Society of Copyright and Neighboring Rights (SOCODA). This could create an environment favoring collaboration between SOCODA and other entities, making it possible to better meet the needs of artists and increase support resources.
Mbiye also suggested the creation of other copyright societies to give artists the freedom to choose their representation. This diversity could reduce tensions between artists and their administrators, thus allowing a calmer climate for artistic creation and career management.
Towards better management of copyright
Pastor Moise Mbiye thanked the Government for the existence of the Place des artistes in Victoire, while making an ironic remark on the fact that one does not have to “die” to be recognized there. His call for significant reforms aims to ensure that Congolese artists can finally make a living from their art, while respecting their rights.
