1 Timothy 3: 14-15: “… in the house of God which is the Church of the living God, pillar and support of truth.”
Every week millions of Christians around the world come together to love God and to listen to his voice through the preaching of the Word of God. Each local church is different and offers the Body of Christ a panoply and diversity unparalleled in the world. But the Church is much more than meeting on Sunday. There is a common thread in the Church that must be found in every local church; something that unites each local church to one another.
1- First of all, the Church is the house of God.
With all that entails. In the Church there is a mind of family. It is a place where love and peace reign. It is in a way the first place where a mind of team. When a sports team wins a cup, it is not the victory of one person, but of the whole team. It is the result of everyone's commitment and sacrifice. True, there is a team captain, but the cup goes not to one person, but to the whole team.
2- Paul also speaks of the Church as: the Church of God.
The word Church in Greek is the word "Ekklesia" which indicates an assembly of citizens who have been called and are different from others. In Athens, citizens belonging to an assembly, the ekklesia, were the governing body of the city. Is it not in accordance with what the Lord said when speaking of this Church that he is building:
Matthew 18: 18
18 Verily I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loosen on earth will be loosed in heaven.
The Church of God is a place where the authority of God is to prevail against all the power of the enemy. This demands from its members a disciplined and virtuous life. Hell has no power over us except the power we give it.
Ephesians 4: 27
27 and do not give access to the devil.
We are called to rule on earth, not over men, but over the power of the enemy, over circumstances and, even sometimes, over events. We are the house of God, and we are also the Church of God.
3- Then he says the Church is the pillar of truth.
Other translations use the word: "column", which makes one think directly of the columns of the temple of Diana in Ephesus, the city where the letter to Timothy is sent, since Timothy is pastor of the Church of Ephesus, this church which will become the largest church of antiquity. One of the particularities of the Temple of Diana (formerly the Temple of Artemis and one of the seven wonders of the ancient world), was its "pillars", its columns. There were more than 100, all in marble. This is the first thing you could see when you were in front of this temple. These pillars speak not of support – a word found in the fourth office of the Church. The columns of the temple are the first thing you see, even from a distance. Thus, the Church being the pillar of truth, one of its great functions is to manifest loud and clear the truth of the Word of God; it serves to bring out the One who is the truth; it is the guarantor of the doctrine of Jesus. Sadly, today many local churches are distinguished more by their music and art, and less and less by their teaching; now, the peculiarity of the Church of God is that it brings out the truth. Let the truth return once again to the center of all Church activity.
4- Finally, the apostle Paul says of the Church that she is the upholder of the truth.
The truth is once again put on the pedestal. For Paul, what makes the Church is not the panoply of programs that it can offer, as good as they are, but what makes the Church so special is that she is the support of the truth. In this world where many are in hiding, where it is not popular to manifest the truth, it is clear that the Church remains still and always the depositary of the truth. In a politically correct world, where we can no longer say things as they are, the Church must stand up and take the truth as a standard and proclaim it loud and clear. In a world that wants to position itself against the Word of God by imposing the theory of evolution on schools, by imposing a certain theory of gender; a world that wants to destroy the traditional family namely a family made up of a man, his wife and his children, and the list goes on; the Church must stand up, and manifest the truth in love and respect.
It is the duty of the Church to say what the Bible says. The world wants to destroy the truth; Perhaps it will one day involve more active persecution on the part of the adversary, but as long as the Church remains, the Truth will prevail.
