Returning to his pulpit with energy just weeks after being shot in the face by carjackers, Pastor Clemmie Livingston Jr. of Zionfield Baptist Church in Memphis, Tenn., said God told him to stop of trying to die while he was bleeding after the shooting.
Livingston, who was wounded just after 9 a.m. Feb. 25 as he left his church before the start of his Sunday morning service, testified about his ordeal in his first appearance at the pulpit since the shooting.
In his Easter Sunday message, the 71-year-old pastor expressed his joy at being back, drawing cheers and applause from his flock. Even after being a preacher for nearly 40 years, he said he must continue to read the scriptures to remember how sure God’s promises are.
Although he did not plan to speak about the shooting, Livingston quickly used the experience to encourage Christians not to abandon their faith. The pastor explained that he would have to be away from the pulpit for some time to undergo follow-up surgeries to repair the damage suffered as a result of his injury.
