On August 28, 2025, the results of an Ifop investigation dedicated to Protestantism in France highlighted a deep renewal of this confession throughout the territory. This national survey, carried out under the direction of Sébastien Fath (CNRS) and Jean-Paul Willaime specialists, reveals a significant recomposition within the Protestant population, mainly carried by the dynamics of the evangelical current.
The study attests that 53 % of Protestants practicing under 35 now favor evangelical identification, establishing this movement as the driving force of contemporary Protestantism. More than half of the Protestant population (58 %) now frequents non-luthero-reformed structures, illustrating a major change in historical landmarks. Under the impetus of youth and a perennial implantation in large agglomerations and the provinces, the evangelical churches bring a new breath to French religious diversity. This dynamic is all the more notable since Protestantism, while remaining a minority (2 % of the national population, around 1.3 million individuals), is now asserting itself as the third confession of the country.
This substantive movement is part of the long history of French Protestantism, with an acceleration of generational renewal observed since the last decade. It reflects increased attractiveness to young generations, seduced by dynamism, community feeling and the ability to adapt to evangelical communities. This renewal directly influences national religious cartography and invites you to rethink the challenges of denominational plurality in France.
The origin of this event lies in a desire to update the understanding of the French religious landscape, in a context where society is changing quickly. The objective of this work is to provide precise, reliable and contextualized data on the profiles and trends of the Protestant fact, in order to clarify societal and political reflection at all scales. Only strictly established and verified facts appear in this text, based on the results of organizations and researchers whose expertise is unanimously recognized.
