Five-time GRAMMY nominee Matthew West is speaking out on social media after his song “Modest Is Hottest” sparked controversy online.
West released the song over Father’s Day weekend, calling it a “lighthearted take on an age-old struggle.” West first explained, “As a father raising daughters, this song is my ridiculously silly way of reminding them that their appearance does not define them. While the world may focus on outward appearance, the Lord looks at the heart. No matter what, they are beautiful inside and out! (Even in a turtleneck).”
The song has created some strong backlash online, including one from singer/songwriter Audrey Assad who took to social media saying, ‘It targets women and positions all men as creeps who can’t stand to see a woman’s skin without turning into uncontrollable monsters. It’s demeaning to both men and women. I really hate that line and in a way it’s the only cockroach that survives literally everything.
West released a brief statement on social media on June 24 clarifying his intentions for writing/releasing the track, which has since been removed from streaming services. “I am blessed to be the father of two amazing girls. I wrote a song that made fun of me for being an overprotective father and my family thought it was funny. The song was created as a satire, and I realize that some people did not receive it the way it was intended. I have taken the feedback to heart. The last thing I want is to distract myself from the real reason I make music: to spread a message of hope and love to the world.”
