Global Methodist Church’s Official Response to UMC Decision
The Global Methodist Church (GMC) has issued an official response in response to the United Methodist Church (UMC) votes in its General Conference to remove the long-standing ban on ordaining non-celibate homosexuals and allow the blessing of same-sex marriages. The vote by delegates of the General Conference The UMC’s decision this week, via a consent calendar, has the effect of changing several rules in the denomination’s Book of Discipline, changing its position on several LGBT issues.
Launched in 2022 as a conservative alternative to the UMC, the Global Methodist Church appears to be clearly distancing itself from these decisions. In a statement Wednesday, GMC said it had “no affiliation with their decisions”nor does it wish to comment or provide commentary on the actions of other religious organizations.” Nevertheless, this young Methodist denomination took the opportunity to reiterate its commitment to maintaining a historical understanding of the Christianityemphasizing his unwavering commitment to his mission. Global Methodist Church maintains its unwavering commitment to advance its mission of proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ and serving its community of more than 4,501 churches and congregations worldwide,” GMC said.
With over 4,501 churches and congregation members, The Global Methodist Church anchors its teachings in the historical confessions of the Christian faith. Created in 2022 after several postponements of the General Conference UMC due to the COVID-19 pandemic, GMC aimed to provide a new denomination for conservatives wishing to leave the UMC in objection to theologically progressive leaders. Although decades of efforts to change rules prohibiting gay marriage and non-celibate gay clergy failed, many liberals within the UMC refused to enforce or follow the ban. As a result, a 2019 special session of the General Conference had approved a temporary measure allowing congregations to leave the UMC, with more than 7,500 churches having gone through that process by the end of last year.
