A redevelopment plan for the industrial district of Sant Andreu, including the enlargement of La Sagrera station, requires the departure of 17 places of evangelical worship. These churches, sometimes installed for decades in industrial premises, have been receiving closure notifications since early April 2025.
The CEC, directed by Guillem Correa, negotiates with the town hall a transition period from 3 to 5 years old and financial aid. “We cannot leave 15 to 20 churches without a meeting place”he insists, emphasizing the impact on often precarious communities.
While evangelical Protestantism becomes the 2ᵉ religion of Spain (in front of Islam), this crisis questions the balance between urban development and rights of religious minorities. Catalonia, a region with the most evangelical churches (928), is particularly concerned.
