pre-add/pre-save. The song was produced by Grammy-nominated Producer of the Year and 2021 Dove Award winner Jordan Sapp. In this TCB exclusive, Murphy reflects on what inspired this new song, how he hopes “Father” connects with listeners and where he draws inspiration from recently.
Do you remember when you first had the idea for “Father”?
I was in the studio with Jordan Sapp and Paul Duncan. This was around the time of all the tragic things that happened in Afghanistan last year. We were talking about all this, and I remember we were all overwhelmed by the added craziness of the world that day. From Covid to all the political stuff in America to Afghanistan now… It was just very real to us that day that the world not only needs God, it needs a Father. There is so much fatherlessness everywhere, but on top of that, not knowing your Creator, your Heavenly Father, is a hopeless place. When you think about it, so many times the world seems like a bunch of children without their father. Unfortunately, for far too many people, this is true. So we started writing, diagnosing our problems, and we wanted a song that was a desperate cry for help, a cry for the love and presence of the Father in the mess we have made on earth, knowing that ‘he’s not far at all from any of us.
Looking back, is there a moment that stands out during the writing/recording process?
I’ll never forget hearing the loop that the whole song is built around for the first time. Jordan played it when we were listening to song ideas, and I was like YO! Stop everything! We write to this! It just inspired so much creativity.
What will be the expected impact of this single?
I hope this single connects with people in a very honest way. There are many people who don’t have fathers or who have breakup situations with their fathers in this world. I come from a family broken that way too. Whether you have daddy issues or not, we all have a despair within us that only our Heavenly Father can satisfy. I hope this song will also help us see the divide in the world for what it is. I think it is important to understand that Jesus came not only to show us the heart of God the Father, but to save us so that we would know God forever as our Father. I want the world to know that this is what they aspire to, whether they know it or not.
How does this single provide a glimpse of what listeners can expect from you in the future?
I think this song represents my desire to show parts of who I am as an artist that I may not have yet. I want to speak through my music in new ways, but ways that are true to who I’ve always been. I still love pop music, I’m still going to be honest and vulnerable about the human heart and our desperation for Jesus. But this song has a worship aspect to its essence that I can’t wait to show more of. I’ve been through so much over the last few years. Honestly, I feel like a different person. I’m ready for the world to see my journey and the goodness of God in it all.
Where do you currently draw your inspiration, whether lyrically or musically?
Personally, I still take a lot from these last years, which were the hardest years of my life. I think music connects well with people when we’re going through good times, but even more so when we’re going through tough times. There is something powerful about simply being able to identify when life gets painful, and for those of us who are Christians, the power to communicate the hope and healing that Christ offers is so much greater in difficult times… Musically, I really love what Maverick City is doing (me and the rest of the world haha) – I I’ve actually been listening to a lot of worship music lately. Of course I also like Tauren Wells. I also listened to a lot of country music, which may surprise some people. I love country lyrics and storytelling, plus I’m from Georgia, so it’s just in me. And I still listen to pop. I really like what Francis Karel is doing, Julia Michaels, The Kid LAROI, I’ve been into AJR lately, and I’m always inspired by Jon Bellion, Jacob Collier and Justin Timberlake.
What are you most looking forward to for the rest of this year?
I’m ready to start not only promoting Father as my next single, but my new album that’s coming out next year…I feel like it’s a new chapter for me. My heart is full. I have so many things I believe God wants me to say. I can’t wait to bring people with me.
