Exclusive, Katy Weirich presents her first project “Out Of The Blue”

Singer, songwriter and worship leader Katy Weirich will release her debut project, Out of The Blue, on June 17. Weirich is joined by multi-Grammy Award winner Tedd T as producer of the EP. The music is an inspiring celebration of God’s love that combines an autobiographical background of Weirch’s life stories. Out of The Blue features five original songs, the sixth being a piano version of “More”. His current single, “Just One,” is already making an impact on music media Christian. In this TCB exclusive, Weirich reflects on what she learned while creating the project, how she will define the EP’s success, and how she chose the title.

Congratulations on the upcoming release of Out Of The Blue! What made you choose the title of the project?
I always dreamed of releasing my own record. At first, I was pursuing an acoustic singer/songwriter, secular duo. And that opportunity failed and other things failed as well in terms of my musical endeavors. That shift, an aha moment, where I felt called to write music for church and for worship – businesses or people in their cars. But it was a change to write music Christian. It happened in 2013 and after going through some tough times, being a mother and battling health issues, it was from these dark places that I got all the material for this next album. The reason we named it “Out Of The Blue” actually came from my husband. I really wanted to call it ‘Out Of The Dark’ because of the season I was in, but there was already stuff released under that name. So he suggested “Out Of The Blue” because it’s a play on words and “baby blues” is a common term for postpartum mental health issues. And there’s also a song called “Blue Jay,” so there was a lot of symbolism. It’s crazy that this is coming out – I wrote these songs in 2017 and 2018 and we recorded in 2019. But then with the pandemic, everything got delayed. Most artists have experienced this. So it’s finally coming true – my dream – to release music. And it’s not when I thought it would be or necessarily the kind of music I initially thought it would be, but it’s 100% beyond what I would have dreamed of. God had planned so much better.

Is there a song or lyric that means something different to you now?
Well, the track that just came out, “Blue Jay,” means even more to me now. When I wrote and recorded it, I only had two children. I had only gone through postpartum anxiety and depression twice. And I didn’t know that I was going to have another child and go through this a third time. So when I had another child and went through it, I already had this song on my computer. And that served me – hearing in my own voice those promises – and knowing that I had this song that I had written and that was comforting. Somehow God used this to sing even over me. The song is about the fact that there is hope, and there is, and you just have to believe in it and keep moving forward.

You previewed the full project with some of your recent singles. What stood out to you in the listeners’ responses?
I know it’s early to say. So far, people say “Blue Jay” is their favorite. “More” was the other track that was really well received. It had an impact and spoke to people. These two answers are probably the most impactful answers I’ve seen so far.

What song or lyric do you think the world needs to hear most in its current state that will resonate the most?
I think of “Blue Jay”. It’s so honest and raw and vulnerable, and I think people just need to hear that. In March, I was leading worship at a local church and ended up sharing the song for the first time with a group of people. After I was done, I had women come up to me in tears saying they could hear my soul. I remember walking up to my husband and telling him there was just something about this song. It’s undeniable and it still surprises me. In the studio I really fought on this one to include it because it goes against all the “rules”. It’s really long (5:12) compared to a 3:30 song. It’s the only song that isn’t cut out for corporate worship. He tells my story.

How would you define the success of this collection?
It’s tricky when you use the word success. As a type A, there are a lot of goals and I want to handle this music in the best way and give it everything I have. But in the end, I can only do my best and the rest is up to the Lord. Success would be that these songs would serve other people, encourage other people with the truths found in the Word of God, and that they would bring people closer to the Lord. I want him to somehow advance the kingdom of God, either by adding new believers or by disciplining the body of Christ so that they can grow.

What did you personally learn from creating this project? What’s next for you?
I pray for that! It’s like working on my doctorate or graduating from college and then wondering what’s next. There is a lot of unknown. I would love the opportunity to lead these songs in real time at different gatherings, churches and events. More opportunities to share this music, make more music and keep writing. I would like to continue to get people in the industry to come on board and move this project forward.
