Irish-born modern hymn writers Keith & Kristyn Getty have released their most acclaimed album to date – Evensong: Hymns and Lullabies at the Close of Day. Born from the thoughts, songs and prayers the Gettys use to close each day with their own family, this project features a blend of lullabies and hymns to help families and individuals declutter the mind and comfort the heart.
Known for their inspiring hymns sung around the world such as In Christ Alone, Speak O Lord and Christ Our Hope in Life and Death, this is not the first time The Gettys have been acclaimed by those outside of Christian music. In 2018, Keith Getty was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for his contributions to modern music and hymnwriting. The Gettys have appeared frequently on stage at many world-renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Grand Ole Opry and many others, performing to sold-out crowds. Additionally, The Gettys have been featured by major media outlets such as CBS Sunday Morning, Fox News, Public Television, the BBC, The Atlantic and USA Today. It is estimated that each year, the Gettys’ songs are sung by more than 100 million people in churches around the world, and recently they began what has become the world’s largest conference for pastors and musicians from around the world.
In the week of its debut, the Gettys’ latest album, Evensong, topped the Billboard charts at No. 1 in the Children’s Album category, surpassing Disney’s Frozen 2 soundtrack for the first time in 36 weeks as the most popular children’s project in the United States. But, as Keith Getty says, “This project is so much broader than just a project for children. From our earliest years to our later years, the hymns and songs we sing are some of our closest companions, shaping the way we think about life, God, ourselves and each other. We wanted to create a timeless album that our children could age gracefully with and that people of all ages could use to refocus their minds and hearts in the midst of the business of life. This project is for the whole family.”
Kristyn Getty, who spearheaded the project as a way to commemorate the songs and prayers she and Keith sing to their own children, was thrilled to hear the widespread acceptance of the project. “In these uncertain times, the need for restful contemplation and focus on God’s Word is more important than ever for Christians around the world. I hope these songs will help people dwell on the Lord and His promises; to release a burdened mind, to calm a restless heart, and to point us toward real peace in Christ.”
The project also represents a major collaborative effort between the Gettys and leading country, bluegrass and classical artists, with new collaborations with Vince Gill, Heather Headley, Ellie Holcomb, Sierra Hull, Deborah Klemme, Sandra McCracken and Skye Peterson. The album’s producer, Ben Shive, was able to bring together the recordings of each musical collaborator and masterfully create a project that fuses the Celtic, folk, bluegrass, classical and Americana sound for which the Gettys have become known around the world.
