Where are you from and where do you live now?
I’m from Lockport, IL. It’s a town about 30 miles southwest of Chicago. I’ve lived in Lockport my whole life.
Can you tell us about this latest single and its inspiration?
The inspiration for “Cover Us” came during a difficult and trying time, I believe, for all of us last year. We were already facing issues and situations in our lives; but to then have the pandemic, the police killing of our African American men, and civil unrest added to that? It was a lot to handle! There were times when I felt fear and worry trying to shake my faith and trust in God. I asked the Lord to give me something to say that would bring comfort and peace to His people during this still difficult time. He answered by reminding me of Psalm 91. From that scripture, I was able to write “Cover Us.” It is a simple prayer to God asking for His divine protection! Even in the midst of all that is happening around us, “there is a secret place where we can dwell and abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” He has the ability to “cover us.”
What are your thoughts on the gospel music industry in 2021?
I think the gospel music industry is still a thriving force in 2021. I am really excited to see new emerging artists making their mark in the gospel music industry. I know we have entered a digital age and we have to continue to make adjustments to keep up with technological advancements, but the gospel music industry is here to stay and I am happy to be a part of it.
For you, name an artist who has been influential in your career and why?
Without a doubt, Elbernita “Twinkie” Clark is an artist that has had a huge influence on my career. As a young girl growing up and learning to play the organ, I was amazed the first time I saw Twinkie Clark in concert in Joliet, IL. She was singing and playing that organ!!! I was blown away. I was empowered by what I saw. I thought, “If she can do it, I can do it.” She is an awesome songwriter, singer, and musician. I would love for my music to have the level of influence that her music still has today. It would be a dream come true if I could one day sing a song or write a song with Twinkie Clark. She is truly a gift to the body of Christ.
What sets you apart from other artists? What makes your art unique?
I think one thing that sets me apart from other artists is the aggressive and passionate way I work, especially when I’m on the organ. Most people don’t expect me to be that way because I’m a very private person, unless I’m praising God! LOL! What makes my art unique? I believe I’m a versatile singer. I can be vocally and musically creative whether I’m singing a hymn, a congregational song, a contemporary gospel song, or a praise and worship song.
Is this single from a past or upcoming EP or album? If so, tell us about it.
The single “Cover Us” is actually the title track of my first solo album released in January of this year. The album has 9 tracks. All of the songs were written by me except for one song called “We Praise You” which was written by my producer Maurice Fears, Sr. “Cover Us” was produced by Rodney East from Chicago, IL. He is one of the greatest musicians and producers in the world. He did the music and vocal production on “Cover Us”. My album has a little bit of everything. Praise and worship, neighborhood, traditional and contemporary gospel too. I am so thankful that God blessed me to finally release this music. The MD for this album was Arreiun Tucker who also played keys and auxes. The band consisted of Curtis Lindsey (organ), Thaddeus Johnson (bass), Darryl Howell (drums). They helped bring my songs to life along with the awesome background singers!
What is your favorite Bible verse and why?
My favorite verse is Psalm 37:4. Delight yourself also in the Lord; and he will give you the desires of your heart. As I began to truly delight in the things of the Lord, the desires I had began to change. My desires began to become desires that were part of His divine plan for my life. God is amazing! We often pursue the things we desire instead of pursuing God FIRST! If we do as He tells us, we will see His word fulfilled in our lives. He has truly given me the desires of my heart and I know He is not done yet because I still have many desires to fulfill.
What other hobbies or interests do you have?
I love doing crosswords, watching game shows, the cooking channel and I love basketball!!
Tell us about this project/single and share how it is making an impact?
Many people have expressed how blessed they have been by the songs on the album. I am honored and encouraged to know that someone in some way is blessed by the music God has allowed me to release. I feel this was the right season for this music to be heard. The title track “Cover Us” is gaining momentum and finding its way to more radio stations. Several doors have opened for me to minister through the song. My desire is simply to encourage the body of Christ in any way I can and music is one of the avenues God has given me to do that.
