Enjoy spending time with God
“The Lord shows himself to me from afar: I love you with an everlasting love; therefore I preserve my kindness to you.” Jeremiah 31.3
Perhaps you think you are doing good deeds, but have you questioned your motives? If they are not pure, you are guilty of the same religiosity that I once did. When you do good to someone just to get something in return, so that others will see you or like you, your motivations are not good.
God desires to have a loving relationship with you.
Religious people do not know how to appreciate their relationship with God. For them, it comes down to a certain number of obligations that they must fulfill in order to be accepted and loved by God. They do not see God as their heavenly Father, but rather as a demanding overseer who keeps track of everything they do and passes judgment on their smallest actions. They impose a very heavy burden on themselves!
To religious people, everything seems to be about laws. They are unable to enjoy the time they spend with God, being too busy trying to carefully follow their list of obligations. They make strict rules about what they practice or what they eat (or don’t eat). They take a legalistic approach to all areas of their lives, from housekeeping to prayer and Bible reading. They do everything out of obligation. They feel obligated to act in this or that way to be a “good Christian” or to maintain God’s favor.
The truth, unfortunately, is that none of us will ever be good enough. Under the weight of the rules we impose on ourselves, we are doomed to failure. We are not able to follow all these religious laws. This type of legalism leads us into a dead end.
This is not what God wants for you! He wants to have a loving relationship with you. Everything He does in your life stems from His unconditional love for you. And he wants everything you do for him to be the same. He wants you to pursue righteousness, not because of a set of rules, but because of the immense love you have for Him.
The truth
Once you can free yourself from the bondage of religion, you can truly begin to love God and serve Him with a pure heart. You no longer need to try to put on a good face in the hope of gaining sympathy from others. And you will never doubt God’s acceptance again.
