In South Florida, a school’s decision Christian private to cancel Autism Awareness Week has sparked a reaction from parents wishing to remove their children from the establishment. Trinity Christian Academy, affiliated with the Pentecostal Assemblies of God denomination, faced backlash after Pastor Matt Baker announced the cancellation of the week’s activities.
Baker justified the decision by saying such protests led students to prioritize their identity over their faith in Jesus Christ. This controversy was sparked by an email sent to families on March 30. The activities planned, as in previous years, included thematic days to raise awareness of autism. According to Baker, any elevation above the name of Christ must be brought low.
In response, some parents are considering pulling their children out of school because of the pastor’s comments. They consider his statements vile, and one of them demanded that the school’s board of directors condemn his message. The school’s decision to also cancel the Easter egg hunt is also drawing backlash.
