Although the name of Benjamin William Hastings does not seem familiar to everyone, the Christians from around the world sang worship songs he wrote for Hillsong UNITED (“So Will I (100 Billion x)”), Cory Asbury (“The Father’s House”), and Brandon Lake (“Gratitude”) – just to name a few. Now, Hastings is releasing his self-titled debut solo album tomorrow (November 4). This impressive twenty-five track album takes listeners on a journey through the heart and mind of Hastings as he shares raw and honest worship songs.
Although this album has twenty-five songs, it features nine interludes, including an intro and an ending song. Uniquely poignant, the intro song, “Hold On To Your Hats” says: “Hold on to your hats, hold on to your hearts.” We’ll lie down in the dust but we’ll look at the stars. These lyrics beautifully represent what Hastings’ songwriting is like and what the listener can expect from the rest of the album. It’s raw, honest truths like this that make Hastings’ writing so memorable.
“Not Even Once” is the sixth track on this album and each lyric is strung together beautifully, it’s hard to pick one to highlight. Essentially, the message of this song is that no matter what, the Lord will never let us down – He never has – not once.
“Anyway,” which Hastings released earlier this year as a single, offers a timely message of praising God, no matter what. This song fits into the overall theme of walking through this journey called life. Hastings offers his listeners hope by reminding them that the Lord is always good, regardless of our circumstances.
Benjamin William Hastings’ debut album takes listeners on a journey through the joys and sorrows of life, with worship interwoven through it all. Hastings reminds his listeners that there will be pain and sorrow that we face during this life, but no matter what, God is still in control. Musically, Hastings’ songs are well written and offer a new sound to love music. The lyrical depth of Hastings’ music is what makes it truly special. There’s something for everyone on this album, even if it’s in one of the shorter interlude songs. Every track has its place on this album and listening to it from start to finish is the true way to see the complete picture.
