The audience wanted to laugh. To laugh at the name of the President of the Republic, now synonymous with lies. To laugh at the “pastor-God” of Delmas who must authorize everything in his church. Even the solo pleasures of his flock that only God should see. To laugh at the words of Jean Charles Moïse… to laugh at Ayiti where everything is upside down. Amos César’s first show, Itiya, at Le Villate, on Sunday August 11, was a success. Confirmed!Amos César in one of these very successful stage plays
Full room. Responsive audience. Laughs every 15, 20 seconds. Amos Caesar, the theologian-comedian, succeeded in his bet. The risk was great. The spectators could not respond to the invitation for a stand-up with a “stranger” from this type of program. But that was hardly the case. At the end of the show, the comedian was treated to a “Standing ovation”. Rather rare in Haiti. Amos Caesar dismissed many questions about his status as a Christian, wanting to try his hand at the “One man show”. He confirmed that he is a professional and that his three years spent at Daniel Marcelin’s Petit Conservatoire have yielded results. Excellent results!
First stand-up, first success
Amos César achieved the objective that every comedian in a show sets: to make the audience laugh. In the theater, the reaction of the audience is not the primary concern of the actors. The main thing is to get the message across the room. However, in the case of stand-up comedy, if the audience is not laughing and interacting with the comedian, the stand-up is a failure. This is the first experience of the former student of Daniel Marcelin who was joined by the actress Gaëlle Bien-Aimé who was responsible for the direction. And on Sunday August 11, all of Le Villate laughed heartily at the actor’s jokes, in Itiya. He was also complicit in the beautiful spectacle that the theologian offered to this audience, mainly Christian. We would never have thought that coming from the “pastor”.
Amos Caesar did not lock his tongue in the Bible
Could a theologian, whom many call “pastor”, make people laugh? In addition to the fact that he absolutely does not look like a comedian. Would he dare to be non-prudish in touching on subjects likely to shock? Would he dare to make a mockery of his church? Well! he did all that. In jokes that did not at all force laughter from the spectators, Amos César abused the inefficiency of the Haitian state. He had the nerve to even touch on the faults of the Protestant Church. “Besides, the best jokes of the evening were those relating to the Church,” remarked Michel Joseph of Radio Télévision Caraibes. But the organizers should be great optimists for creating this poster.
Calculated risk
Risk calculated for the Christian morning show, Agora 7-10, of Alleluia FM which for its two years concocted this stand-up. Successful show. Masterful representation. Deeply comic piece. With a stage presence worthy of the biggest names in stand-up that Amos César provoked hilarious laughter throughout the audience. For Jeff Lefèvre, communicator and senior public administration executive, “It’s a risk that the organizers took to highlight someone unknown in the field, in a genre that the Christian public is not very familiar with. , but Amos comes out with flying colors”.
He is a Christian without taboos who reigned as master and lord of laughter in Le Villate. Politics; the Presidency; the parliament; the modern language of “brenndjenn”; spicy sexual innuendo; the famous promise of the president, indicted by a group of opposition deputies, to supply the 27,750 square kilometers of Haiti with electricity 24/7 since July 2019; the deceptions of the “allist” pastors of the Protestant church… all were beaten up in Itiya’s naturally comic representation.
The comedian started from the allegory of the meteor which would have given superpowers to Superman. He took the example of Haitian compatriots who would have super powers coming from this extraterrestrial rock to guess the thoughts of others, to make others tell the truth or have an explanation for everything… All this in the logic to ask the question which ended the show: “Since when did we lose our minds in Haiti?
