Music ministry is not rocket science. However, if you ask Brad Perry, former award-winning NASA rocket scientist, it is no less important and deserves just as much thought, focus, and precision. While he trained astronauts for their shuttle missions and was part of the design team for the International Space Station, today his focus is on worship. Brad and his wife Joanie, an educator, known professionally as Alabaster Grace, have put their creativity, intelligence, and passion into creating thoughtful, insightful, and reverent worship music.

The pair enlisted the talents of multiple Dove Award-winning Chris Bevins (producer and keyboards for Selah, Salvador, Jaci Velasquez) to bring the song to life. In addition to serving as keyboardist, Bevins, in turn, enlisted some of Nashville’s finest studio musicians for the recording, including drummer Dan Needham (Amy Grant, Jeremy CampMichael McDonald, Sting), guitarist Mike Payne (Casting CrownsFrancesca Battistelli, Mandisa, Lauren Daigle, Natalie Grant) and bassist Jacob Lowery (Gaither Vocal Band, Seth & Nirva).
Joanie, Alabaster Grace’s primary songwriter, wrote the song, while Brad wrote the guitar parts. Together, Joanie and Brad developed the song and worked out the arrangement with Bevins.
The eclectic “Word of God” is as musically complex as it is lyrically intriguing. Exploring messianic rhythms as it exalts Yeshua (Jesus Christ) as Messiah, Redeemer and King, the song is carefully crafted and meticulously executed.
“The Word of God” was born out of a period of Bible study, using rich Middle Eastern-style acoustic chord progressions that connect listeners to the Holy Land, where Christ was born, served, and ultimately gave his life for the sins of the world. Taken from the first chapter of the Gospel of John, it reflects the awesome concept that the Word was with God in the beginning, and the Word was God.
“As I progressed through the writing process, I expanded on the names of God,” Joanie explains. “That ultimately led to examining what our Lord has done for us. He gave His life for all of us as the Lamb of God! The Gospel of John is so rich. Our prayer is that people will hear the song and want to dig deeper into God’s Word. We think the Gospel of John is a great place to start.”
With its beautiful vocals, acoustic flavors and world-infused rhythms, “Word of God” is sure to strike a resounding chord with a world hungry for answers.
Already, the single is resonating with radio and industry professionals.
“Alabaster Grace’s ‘Word of God’ incorporates a unique style of music that sets it apart from other songs and ties it to the Holy Land,” says Kathryn Livingston of Westar Media Group. “The lyrics highlight the first chapter of John and that God is the creator of the Earth. It’s a song to listen to!”
Colleen Dick, Executive Director of The Word in Praise: Contemporary Christian Music WWIP 89.1 FM, echoes this sentiment, saying, “Alabaster Grace’s Word of God is a timeless reminder of who God is and what He has done for us. I appreciate the use of scripture and I love the musical style.”
