Africa: acquittal of pastor prosecuted for child kidnapping
A pastor famous and locally influential for his fiery preaching of a church evangelical tried in a child kidnapping case was acquitted Thursday in Goma, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, while three co-defendants who had named him as their leader were sentenced to death.
The military court which has been examining the case since last month revealed that it lacked evidence to convict Jean Omari, pastor of the “Church Christian for all nations Emmanuel”, famous and locally influential for his fiery prayers and miracles.
On the other hand, his three co-defendants were found guilty of child kidnapping and criminal conspiracy and sentenced to death. The death penalty is still handed down in the DRC but systematically commuted to life imprisonment.
