4 characteristics of Jezebel in the church: let’s discover them together!

Published on

The term “Jezebel” has multiple meanings and connotations, depending on the context in which it is used. Here are the primary definitions:

Biblical Reference: In the Hebrew Bible, Jezebel was a Phoenician princess and the wife of King Ahab of Israel. She is known for promoting the worship of the god Baal and for her role in the persecution of the prophets of Yahweh, which ultimately led to her infamous reputation. Her actions, including the orchestration of Naboth’s death to seize his vineyard, contribute to her portrayal as a symbol of wickedness, idolatry, and manipulation.

Cultural Usage: In modern vernacular, “Jezebel” is often used to describe a woman who is perceived as promiscuous, manipulative, or immoral. The term carries a negative connotation and can imply that a woman is using her sexuality to achieve power or influence.

Feminist and Literary Critique: In feminist discourse, the figure of Jezebel can be analyzed in terms of how women are often unfairly villainized or demonized in literature and culture. Jezebel’s narrative has been used to discuss themes of misogyny, social control, and the double standards applied to women’s behavior compared to men’s.

Media and Pop Culture: The name “Jezebel” has also been adopted in various media, including literature, music, and film, often to invoke themes of seduction, betrayal, and defiance against patriarchal norms.

Overall, the definition of “Jezebel” is multifaceted, encompassing historical, cultural, and sociopolitical interpretations that reflect broader themes about gender, power, and morality.

Modern idolatry in the church (Jezebel): how to recognize and combat it

The Divine Words ministry released a video on YouTube that describes the characteristics of Jezebel in the church. In this article, we will look at the four main characteristics of Jezebel as depicted in the video.

(1) Prostitution

The first characteristic is prostitution, which represents at the same time marital and spiritual infidelity. A person who is not sanctified cannot be responsible in the church.

A person who leads a double life, who is an adulterer, who deceives people, who allows himself to be controlled by the lusts of the pulpit should not have responsibilities in the church, but preferably be helped to change his life.

This profile is often found in choirs, as cantors, as worship leaders, preachers, pastors, church administrators and musicians. We are all imperfect, but a person who heads a department of the church must be sanctified.

(2) Idolatry

The second characteristic is idolatry, which goes beyond carved images. Idolatry is anything that takes the place of God in our hearts. Today, some pastors and artists stand out more for their talent than for their faith in Jesus, which is a sign of the manifestation of Jezebel. Indeed, this makes people idolize the celebrity more that the .

(2) Handling

The third characteristic is handling. A manipulative person lies to achieve his ends. Some of these people hold positions in the church and act as if they are running a business enterprise by giving orders. The church is a place where love and companionship should dominate, because we are all brothers and sisters.

(4) Persecution

The fourth characteristic is persecution. Jezebel persecuted the of Jesus, and this also exists in the church, especially towards people who seek to apply the will of God. When this is the case, the Jezebel spirit creates divisions and fuels gossip.

If someone exhibits these characteristics in your church, pray for them. But, above all, do not be the one who fuels gossip and slander about .
